Eligibility criteria for institutes

Accreditation / Re-Accreditation: Guidelines

Minimum number of onco-surgical cases per year – 500

  • The centre should have a SOAPC Certified teacher, who is a full-time anaesthesiologist and a life-member of SOAPC. No centre can be accredited without certified teachers.In case a certified teacher leaves an accredited centre, this should be informed to the SOAPC office.
    IT NEEDS TO BE ENSURED THAT TEACHERS WHO TAKES THE CANDIDATE SHALL BE AVAILABLE TILL COMPLETION OF THE COURSE OF THE CANDIDATE OR ELSE A SUITABLE ELIGIBLE TEACHER MUST BE AVAILABLE. [UNDERTAKING NEEDS TO BE SUBMITTED FOR THE SAME]
  • The centre should have an annual turnover of at least 500 onco-surgical procedures requiring anaesthesia with a good case mix, i.e., various surgical specialities, radiation oncology and NORA procedures.
  • The number of cases: student ratio should be 500:1 i.e., for every 500 onco-surgeries, there can be 1 fellow. A single centre can have a maximum of 4 candidates per year.
  • The teacher student ratio is 1:1.
  • The centre should have a good library providing access to text books and journals pertaining to anaesthesiology, intensive care, pain management and oncology.
  • Furthermore, the centre should propose MINIMUM OF twice weekly academic schedule INCLUDING SEMINARS, CASE DISCUSSIONS, JOURNAL CLUB.
  • The centre shall not levy any direct or indirect charges from the SOAPC candidates in relation to the fellowship program. However, the students shall pay the registration and examination fees directly to SOAPC.
  • The candidate shall be paid stipend/remuneration as applicable to a senior resident by the training centre as per its norms.
  • Newly started centres, desirous of accreditation, need to be functional for at least one year before the inspection for recognition.
  • All accredited centres will be re-inspected after 5 years. In case an accredited centre has candidates failing their SOAPC examination / no appearance consecutively for 3 years, the recognition will be withdrawn and a re-accreditation will be subjected to further inspection.
  • For newly opened centres, initial recognition will be for 2 years following which re-accreditation will be required, which will be valid for 5 years.
  • SOAPC assumes no responsibility for accidents/illness/insurance etc. towards the candidate during the course of the fellowship.
  • Accreditation Fee: The centre will be required to pay SOAPC a registration fee of Rs.25,000/- towards accreditation. In addition, travelling expenditure and local hospitality of the Inspector/inspectors (which shall be two in numbers) are also to be borne by the centre. For re-accreditation, the registration fee is Rs.10000/-only.
  • On the receipt of application on the prescribed form and registration fee for centre recognition, SOAPC will depute an expert member to inspect the centre.
  • Application form for SOAPC Teacher Certification is available on the SOAPC website. If two centres wish to apply together after pooling their resources, we can see whether that is feasible and can be considered.
    THE FINAL DESCISION SHALL BE TAKEN BY INPECTORS AND UNDERTAKING FROM BOTH THE INSTITUTES FOR SHARING AND POOLING FOR THE SAME NEEDS TO BE SUBMITTED.

Criteria for multispecialty Non-Cancer Centre accreditation :

  • It should have a variety of cases (last six months OT list of that particular centre will be screened)
  • The student should be exposed to a minimum of 5 cases/week
  • If a centre doesn’t have a particular group of onco-surgery specialty (e.g. peds or neuro), the student should be sent for a rotation for a minimum period of 2 weeks.
  • The logistics regarding travel and accommodation has to be taken care by the student himself. Regarding the pay and leave during those two weeks, the individual centre policies are applicable.


Eligibility criteria for Faculty :

  • Post MD, ten years of clinical experience
  • Involved in the perioperative care of at least 3 cancer patients per week in the operating room and/or intensive care unit and/or pain clinic
  • Involved in teaching in training like sessions in city, state, national and international CMEs and Conferences Or
  • Faculty to any other teaching programme including DNBs/fellowship etc
  • Instructor for any of the structured training programme like CPR, USG workshops, FCCS or similar programme at institute/national OR international level
  • Involved in conducting workshops as faculty at any platform


Eligibility of students and selection criteria :

  • Should have a postgraduate degree (MD / DNBE) in Anaesthesia
  • The candidate will be selected as per individual centre selection policies.
  • There won’t be any entry exam conducted by SOAPC.
  • Once a candidate is selected, the centre will notify about the candidate to SOAPC within 2 weeks.
  • There will be an exit exam which will be conducted by SOAPC at the end of One year.
  • The place and date of centre will be finalized based on the suitability.
  • The duration of the fellowship will be 1 year, and the fellowship will start from February of each year.
  • There will be a maximum of 1 month grace period (31st March), to be eligible for the exam for that particular academic year.
  • If there is already a university affiliated fellowship in a particular centre, it’s that centre decision to run or conduct a SOAPC fellowship.
  • SOAPC will take the responsibility of advertising the fellowship positions and availability of fellowships at different centres.
  • The candidate and the mentor/teacher/guide must be a member of SOAPC.
  • The student should be involved in the perioperative management of at least 3 cancer patients every week
  • It is desirable for the candidate to present a poster or a paper during the National conference of SOAPC or any other national conference (but the topic should be related to Oncoanaesthesiology).
  • The candidate also needs to attend the SOAPC annual national conference.
  • The certificate of fellowships will be given to the passed-out candidates during a convocation ceremony held during the SOAPC annual national conference.
  • Regarding two batches per year, the decision will be taken based on the number of candidates or may be later over the years.
  • The teacher student ratio will be 1:1.

Application for Accreditation of the Institute for Fellowship in OncoAnaesthesia Perioperative Medicine (FOAPM)
